George Cleland
Position: Principal Consultant

George Cleland received BSc and PhD degrees from Glasgow University. After graduating, he worked first in the Department of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University and then the Department of Computer Science at Edinburgh University. He was appointed Assistant Director of the Laboratory for the Foundations of Computer Science in 1986. He moved to Harlequin in 1995, and joined Adelard in 2000.

After a PhD in Nuclear Structure Physics concerned with neutron capture detector design and multi-dimensional data analysis, George moved into designing real-time data collection and analysis systems, and nuclear instrumentation design. The role grew to encompass computer system management and this led to a transfer to the Department of Computer Science in Edinburgh University where he managed a variety of computer systems supporting both teaching and research, eventually becoming convener of the computing equipment and software policy function for the University.

In 1986 with the establishment of the Laboratory for Foundations of Computer Science in Edinburgh, he was appointed Assistant Director. Over the next ten year LFCS grew to host over 80 staff, and numerous highly regarded research projects. George managed the LFCS infrastructure, and in particular developed exploitation links with industry, including collaborative projects, industrial courses and software licensing. During the early 90s he managed a number of safety-related projects in collaboration with industry and other academic groups. These included the EU funded Network of Excellence OLOS - An Holistic Approach to System Safety; Mathematically Proven Safety Systems; and most recently Communication in Safety Cases bringing together industrial and academic expertise across the fields of computer science, artificial intelligence, human communications, and sociology. In addition he managed a Teaching Company programme with Adelard, and in 1994/5 ran a project for the DTI to develop a strategic research initiative for the UK in the exploitation of formal approaches to system design.

In 1995 he moved to Harlequin, a software house active in the niche markets of pre-press imaging software, software tools, and information management systems for law enforcement. As well as operating in a general management role he managed several projects including the development of adaptive workflow imaging systems for the pre-press industry; the integration of bespoke software and commercial database systems into a large scale distributed system supporting case management for police use; and the development of a virtual "e-money" system to support OEM customers in sub-licensing software.

In 2000 George joined Adelard, and has been managing a project to conduct the static analysis of a large body of legacy code to identify potential problems and coding issues, to support its re-engineering and deployment in a safety-critical context. In addition he is working in a general management role, and in business development.
