Education and Qualifications

Luke Emmet has an MA from the University of Aberdeen (1990-1994) and an MSc Cognitive Science from the University of Manchester (1994-1995). He then joined Adelard as a Consultant specialising in human factors studies.

Development of standardisation and guidance

  • (1999 - 2000) Co-author of a guide on the development of Virtual Instruments (VIs) for the DTI's Software Support for Metrology programme (SSFM).
  • (1998) Designed and implemented a hypertext authoring environment for the development of JSP 318B (Military Airworthiness) based on the Claviar toolset.
  • (1995 - 1996) Performed video analysis of a recorded Hazard and Operability (Hazop) meeting, looking at human factors issues as witnessed in an actual expert setting. Reviewed Interim Def Stan 00-58 and made recommendations on the transferral of Hazop techniques to programmable electronic systems (PES).

Safety assessment and consultancy

  • (1998 - 1999) Working on a project for Railtrack looking at improving and evaluating the hazard identification process.
  • (1997 - Present) Part of the ISA team for two military air traffic control systems. Made recommendations on the safety case for the interface design and broader human factors considerations.
  • (1996 - Present) Working on a number of projects looking at the feasibility of developing a corporate memory facility for safety documentation for Railtrack. This involved eliciting Railtrack's requirements by means of a series of structured interviews, carrying out a tools survey, and making recommendations for implementation of the facility

Software Development consultancy

  • (1999 - Present) Designer and developer of the Adelard Safety Case Editor (ASCE)
  • (1997 - Present) Designer and developer of the Adelard Claviar toolset to support the use, development and compliance with complex documents such as safety standards. These tools are based on Internet technologies and open hypertext paradigms and allow users and developers to work with complex documents in a collaborative environment.
  • (1995 - 1996) Worked on the Esprit project Reaims. Reviewed Reaims modules and participated in development of the human factors process evaluation module Pere. Performed a Pere analysis of the standards-making process and considered how Reaims fits into and contributes to existing safety critical standards.

MSc Thesis

  • (1994 -1995) MSc in Cognitive Science; thesis considered cognitive workload and task allocation issues for submarine sonar room operators.
